NON-EMERGENCY PERSONNEL AND FAMILY MEMBERS AUTHORIZED TO RETURN TO CHAD

May 2, 2008

The Department of State has authorized the return of U.S. Embassy non-emergency personnel and adult family members to Chad.  Family members of Embassy personnel under the age of 21 are not authorized to reside in Chad.

The Department of State continues to urge American citizens in Chad to defer all travel to Chad due to the continuing unstable security situation throughout the country.  American citizens in Chad are strongly encouraged to register at the Consulate on Avenue Felix Ebou, or by Internet at https://travelregistration.state.gov.  Please encourage all Americans with whom you come in contact to register with the U.S. Embassy in person or online.  If you have previously registered but have changed any contact information, it is important that you notify the Embassy promptly.

American citizen services are available at the Embassy, but visa services continue to be suspended.  The U.S. Embassy in Chad can be reached at 251-6211; 251-9052 or 251-9233.  The after-hours emergency number is (235) 251-7009.  The Consular Officer’s cellular phone number is (235) 652-2416.  In the event that telecommunications in Chad become inoperable, an Officer may be reached through the Cameroonian number: (237) 941-57608.  The Embassy’s website, which includes consular information and the most recent messages to the American community in Chad, is http://ndjamena.usembassy.gov/.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warning for Chad and Country Specific Information for Chad can be found.  Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. eastern time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays)
