AMERICAN LIBRARY
American Library
AMERICAN LIBRARY, name given to the Information Resource Center in Ndjamena - Chad is the research and reference service of the U.S. Embassy. Its mission is to provide comprehensive and reliable information on all aspects of the United States -- including foreign policy, economy, history, culture, society and values - to both the Chadian community and Embassy personnel.
IRC N'Djamena has a collection of over 3,000 volumes (both circulating and reference books), a collection of CD-ROMs, over 500 videocassettes, some 19 periodicals, and six local newspapers, as well as access to the Internet and on-line databases for research purposes.
Chadians with a serious research interest in the United States may apply to become members of the IRC; current membership includes government officials, academics, journalists, representatives of private NGOs and organizations, students, and members of the diplomatic community.
In addition to serving the membership, the IRC also actively promotes such issues as democracy and human rights, free and independent media, economic reform, and understanding of U.S. society and values through outreach to key Chadian decision-makers. The IRC will move increasingly toward replacing paper resources with electronic research and outreach in keeping with Chad's technological development.
