    40+ English-speaking Chadian professionals – teachers and NGO activists, students and government workers – attended a Friday morning September 7 showing of the Convention speeches delivered by Governor Mitt Romney and President Barak Obama as they accepted their party’s call to office. Transcripts were provided all the participants to let them better follow the speeches, as well as to write personal comments and notes on the side of the candidates’ remarks.

    American Ambassador Mark Boulware presided over a ceremony on Thursday, August 30, at which a $25,000 grant - provided by the Julia Taft Refugee Fund - was awarded to the Al Richate Association, to support its radio broadcast services in eastern Chad. The recently formed Al Richate Association owns and operates Radio Sila, a community radio station based in Goz Beïda. The station is a life line for many of the nearly half million refugees, internally displaced persons, and local residents to be found in camps and towns throughout the region.

    It's summer time in Chad, and the nation's schools are closed. But nearly 20 English teachers from N’Djamena attended a webinar (a real time seminar available via the internet: web + seminar = webinar) on Wednesday, August 22, about the use of online and video games as teaching tools in the classroom. This internet-based program was one of many the American Embassy has hosted for English teaching professionals in Chad, all of which are designed to help improve their classroom skills and learning techniques

    An Embassy team, comprised of the Ambassador and Mrs. Boulware, the ARSO, the USAID Program Manager, three journalists from a local newspaper and N’Djamena radio stations, and three motor-pool drivers traveled to Mongo and Ati regions to visit USAID project sites.A total of six projects were visited (see photos), with the last stop on the itinerary being in the town of Yao located near Lake Fitri, Chad’s second largest lake. It is also the seat of the Boulala sultanate. It was at this stop in Yao that Ambassador Boulware inaugurated a newly-created community radio station with the Boulala Sultan, the Batha Governor and the president of the High Communications Council.

    The April 16 visit to PDev II headquarters in N’Djamena allowed DCM Todd Holmstrom (center) to learn from project staff about the mechanics of putting together these popular weekly broadcasts. Pictured second from the right is the interim Country Director who managed the PDev II project for several months pending recruitment of a permanent replacement. Others shown here are members of the youth production crew.
